Sinclair, Shirley

February 19, 1941 – January 7, 2021

Passed away peacefully with her daughters at her side at Southlake Regional Healthcare Centre, Newmarket on Thursday January 7, 2021. Daughter of the late Florence and Gordon Gilmore. Loving mother of Penny and Tracy Donovan and much loved Grandma of Gregorey. Dear sister of Joan Westlake. Loving Aunt of Ken, Brian and Wayne Westlake. Shirley will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by extended family members and her wide circle of friends.

A Celebration of life will be planned for a time when we can be together again. If so desired, memorial donations to Matthews House Hospice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Drury Funeral Centre, Alliston. 705-435-3535.

Shirley was born in Alliston on February 19, 1941 to Florence and Gordon Gilmore. After completing her formal education, she began a career with the Ontario Provincial Police in Alliston and retired after 42 years of service. Shirley took great pride in her work and was highly respected by her colleagues. In her retirement, she enjoyed travelling the world with friends and family. Shirley was always a true friend and gave selflessly to others. Her kindness and compassion brightened the days of many. She was very active in her community and was a dedicated member of the Women’s Probus Club, the Red Hats Society, and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In each of these groups she established and maintained lifelong friendships. In addition, Shirley was a volunteer at Matthews House Hospice. In reflecting upon the life of our Mom, we are so proud of all that she gave to our family, her friends and her community. She lived up to the mottos of the groups in which she participated. Her strength was gained from fellowship and her success was seen in her participation. Life, learning and friendship; three words that established the cornerstones of her commitment to all that she did.

In recent years, our Mom bravely fought to overcome the pain and suffering of cancer. As she fought, she was supported and surrounded by the love of family and friends and a dedicated health care team. We are forever grateful to our family and friends. We would like to thank the staff at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre, Southlake Regional Health Care Centre, Home Health Nursing staff and the dedicated staff of Matthews House Hospice for their professional, compassionate care.

It is with very heavy hearts and a sense of sadness beyond compare that we say farewell to our beautiful Mom. “You are gone, but will never be forgotten. May you rest peacefully and may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

To Shirley’s Daughters and Family,
Thinking of you at this sad time and sending our sincere condolences. I got to know your Mom, initially, through volunteering in the community. My Mom knew Shirley by living in the same neighbourhood. Your Mom made the effort to visit my Mom in Long-Term Care numerous times, even when it was not easy, and when she was battling cancer herself. I will always remember her kindness, selflessness, and thoughtfulness; she was a very special lady.❤️

I had the honour and privilege of working with Shirley at the OPP detachment in Beeton and after returning to Nursing at Stevenson Memorial Hospital ER post OPP I would run into Shirley in the halls of the hospital and we would always chat and catch up. She always had a smile and was so vibrant , she always took time to talk to me . She was a wonderful person , mother and work colleague. I am a better person for having known her. My condolences to all of her family. She was certainly one of a kind .

Dear Penny, Tracy and family,
My thoughts and sincere condolences are with you all. I got to know Shirley during her cancer journey and it was my sincere privilege to be able to be her nurse every week at her home. She was one of the most courageous and strongest women i have met, we shared many wonderful moments and good chats. She underwent all of her treatments with positivity and strength, never giving up. I will miss her greatly and know she is free from her burdens now. Rest in peace Shirley.
